Brady Street Market Pt. I
Fall 2015 / Architectural Design I  / Sahar Hosseini

Public markets have been central to community life across time and cultures. Although modern supermarkets lead to their decline, consumers’ increased interest in knowing where their food comes from and how it’s produced has catalyzed their resurgence. The program for this project was a Public Market made of masonry, steel, and glass located in Milwaukee, WI. The design also needed to create a Market Square, an outdoor public space, that could accommodate a variety of events that would foster community such as seasonal stalls for farmer’s markets, a stage for performers, space for art installations, and community gardens.  The linear plan allows for endless possibilities for stall arrangements and provides the flexibility to accommodate a number uses. The 10’ topography change from the North to South end of the site created the opportunity for market entries to be placed on different levels, using the public market to fuse the adjacent streets.

Brady Street Market Pt. II
Team Members: Taylor Bybee, Brian Kelly

This project was a continuation of Brady Street Market Pt. I and also part of a studio-wide competition. Projects from Pt.I were selected from each studio to be the subject of further tectonic development. In teams of 3, teams had to select a part of an exterior wall from the first project to refine, further develop, and work out the technical details. The corner of the Brady Street Market Pt. I was chosen for further development primarily because of an interest in the dovetail corner. The design also implemented a stack bond, altered in some portions of the wall, and experimented with different types of mortar joints. The competition was juried by UWM faculty and Wisconsin Masonry Industry Partners. The top 3 projects had the opportunity to work with masons to build a full-scale mock-up of a portion of their proposed facade designs. This design won the competition.
