PIPE DREAM
SPRING 2018 / HYPER REAL ULTRA FAKE / DANIEL JACOBS

/pīp drēm/

noun
1. an unattainable or fanciful hope or scheme.
Synonyms: fantasy, illusion, delusion

For some, the bathroom, specifically the toilet, elicits connotations of disgust; it’s considered to be as gross as the bodily excrement which it helps us rid ourselves of. For others, time spent on the toilet provides a moment for contemplation and a chance to venture through our minds, escaping our mundane realities, and exploring our craziest whims, our darkest emotions, or our most creative endeavors.

This image’s ambition is to upset common connotations surrounding bathrooms and tries to suggest that the bathroom is perhaps one of the purest, and most profound sites for wonder. The bathroom is our own private haven
for exploring our wildest dreams. The reflective nature of the surfaces (i.e. the porcelain fixtures and tiles, mirrors, and metal pipes) can be considered a material manifestation, and reinforcer, of the mental reflections that ensue. The image strives to evoke wonder. Questions arise: “Where am I? Is this actually a bathroom? Why is the pipe cut into the wall? Where does that pipe go? Why is the pipe exposed? Am I looking outside? Am I looking at myself? Is it a painting? Is it wet? Why is it wet? Is it because there’s a hole in the pipe? Why is that hole in the pipe? Where does it go?” And so on. And before you realize it, you’ve lost yourself in thought, and you’re traveling through your mind, questioning and theorizing all the mysteries of the world. Then, something, perhaps a toilet flushes, or someone laughs, or maybe you just exhausted the extents of your mind, and your attention is jolted back to reality, and you realize it was all just a pipe dream.
